ACE Executive Director Inducted into Kansas Hall of Fame

For Immediate Release
September 21, 2019

Wichita, Kansas – The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) is pleased to announce the induction of our Executive Director, Mr. C. Edward Young to The Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame. The Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame was created to preserve the memory of extraordinary citizens of Kansas who have made contributions to aviation of statewide or national significance. Prior inductees include Amelia Earhart, Clyde Cessna, Lloyd Stearmen, Olive Ann and Walter Beech, Gary Burrell and Min Kao (Garmin founders), William P. Lear, Dwane L Wallace, and Matty Laird.

Each year, a selection committee consisting of four organizations, the Kansas Aviation Museum, the Kansas Historical Society, the State Aviation Advisory Committee, and the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Technology, considers individuals to be recognized for this prestigious honor.

The foundation of Mr. Young’s recommendation for the Hall of Fame was his service to the State of Kansas as the Director of Aviation and his impact as an innovator in the field of system planning and aviation program development.

Mr. Young originated the idea for the Kansas Airspace Awareness Tool (KAAT). KAAT overlaid the airspace (imaginary) departure, arrival and conical surfaces on readily available Internet based formats permitting local governments in Kansas to adopt airspace protection measures. KAAT was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies with an Engineering Honors Award. It also received the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) Award as the Outstanding State Aviation Program.

Mr. Young originated and delivered the Airport Ops for Cops program. This program partnered the Transportation Security Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration, local law enforcement, local airport managers and the Kansas Department of Transportation in the delivery of critical airport interaction education. The NASAO Center for Aviation Research and Education recognized this program as the Outreach Program of the Year.

ACE Executive Director,              C. Edward Young

Mr. Young resurrected the All Kansas Air Tour. The original Kansas Air Tour started in 1928 and ran for only two years. In 2008, the All Kansas Air Tour visited 28 airports in 8 days. Prior to the 2008 Tour, Mr. Young visited dozens of communities promoting the history of Kansas aviation. The air tour continues to promote Kansas aviation. The 2019 air tour is scheduled for September 26-28. The tour is recognized as one of the most creative STEM activities in the country.

Mr. Young served as the President of the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education and a founding member and President of the Fly Kansas Foundation. At KCAE, he played a pivotal role in establishing Aviation Day at the Capitol.

We are beyond proud to see Ed recognized for these contributions and look forward to all that he will do in advancing our mantra, “The Sky is Just the Beginning!”
