SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In Inc. Announces Tourism Partnership Agreement with The Bahamas

For Immediate Release: June 29, 2018

Lakeland, FL – SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In, Inc. is pleased to announce a new tourism partnership agreement with the Bahamas. SUN ‘n FUN will utilize their resources and facilities to encourage general aviation aircraft to use the recently renamed Lakeland Linder International Airport as both the embarkment point and Port of Entry for trips to the island nation.

John “Lites” Leenhouts, President and CEO of SUN ‘n FUN, and several of the company’s executive staff recently returned from a familiarization tour of some of the island destinations that they will be promoting. While there, they met with top officials from The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation (MOTA).

“This is an unprecedented opportunity to create adventure destinations in The Bahamas for the general aviation community while at the same time enhancing Florida tourism,” he said. “By showcasing our new official Port of Entry at the Lakeland Linder International Airport, we will create an attractive destination option for pilots transitioning to the Bahamas. Lakeland and Polk County have amazing, affordable amenities in our convenient Central Florida location providing pilots an excellent pre-destination experience.”

Greg Rolle, Senior Director USA Sales and Marketing Bahamas MOTA, said “We are very excited with the prospect this relationship represents. Florida is our number one tourism source for the Islands of the Bahamas, and when our partnership with SUN ‘n FUN brings more people into the state on their way to the Bahamas, we expand our reach and promote our Florida partners at the same time. Everybody wins.”

SUN ‘n FUN will be collecting data and best practices on flying general aviation aircraft to specific destinations in the Bahamas, providing pilots a one-stop resource to obtain the information they need to plan their flight. The information will be placed in a dedicated section of the official SUN ‘n FUN website.

“People don’t realize how simple it can be to fly into the Bahamas,” said Leenhouts. “We are going to use our website and extensive network of experience to help demystify the experience with an easy-to-follow guide and show people how easy it really is.”

SUN ‘n FUN also recently met with Ken Lawson, President and CEO of Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism marketing company, who applauded the initiative and pledged their support.

SUN ‘n FUN envisions using this tourism partner agreement to further its mission of promoting general aviation, and in doing so gain additional visibility for its Aerospace Center for Excellence STEM complex located on the Lakeland airport. The company has plans for several group flyouts to the Bahamas in the coming months to kick off the new promotion. Leenhouts said that they expect between ten and twenty general aviation aircraft to sign up for each excursion.
